Good thing it’s not football season. Sabra Hummus, the official dip of the N.F.L., has recalled 30,000 cases of its Classic Hummus after a routine inspection in Michigan revealed the presence of potentially harmful listeria monocytogenes in the chickpea spread. The company noted that there were no reports of illness caused by the products and listed the affected products online.
Excuse me while I remove the Sabra Classic Hummus with matching SKU from my fridge and chuck it in the trash.
Okay. It’s not the first time listeria has been detected in American retail versions of your favorite Middle Eastern dip. Seven tons of hummus were recalled in the U.S. in May 2014 over a possible contamination.
Sabra is working with the Food and Drug Administration to address the issue and get their products back on shelves. Until then, maybe now’s a good time to try making your own.
