Okay, so but what really happened in Tuesday’s special election? Ben Jacobs was our man in Queens, and, today in Tablet Magazine, he reports that while some Jewish voters still voted for the losing candidate, David Weprin, out of vestigial loyalty to the Democratic Party, others, fervently opposed to President Obama’s Israel policies (or at least what they believe them to be), went ahead and voted for the non-Jewish non-Democrat. The end of the New Deal coalition? Or, in Jacobs’ words, “the type of quirk that puts the special in special elections”? We may have to wait until November 2012 to find out.
