President Donald Trump announced a new Gaza ceasefire proposal early Wednesday. According to The Times of Israel, the deal would include a 60-day pause in fighting, during which Hamas would release 10 living hostages and return the remains of 18 others. An estimated 50 hostages remain in Gaza, about half of whom the Israeli government believes are dead, according to Time magazine. Trump stated on Truth Social that Israel has agreed to the deal.

As evident from the president’s post, the message carries an implicit threat against Hamas should the group reject the proposal. On Wednesday, Hamas indicated openness to a ceasefire arrangement but stopped short of accepting Trump’s plan, according to PBS. The group reiterated its long-standing demand that any agreement must bring a complete end to the war.
