    I had just stopped at my grandparents’ apartment to walk with them to shul on the Shabbat morning of my bar mitzvah. My grandmother saw me in my new polyester suit and, kvelling, exclaimed, “Oy, what a handsome boy.” Then my grandfather spit on the carpet and said, “Az men batziert a bezem iz er oich shain.” Which means, Dress up a broom and it will also look nice.

    At my grandfather’s funeral, when I cried for the first time in many years, I fled to the bathroom to be alone for a minute and collect myself. This thought, another favorite of his, came to mind:
    “Altsding lozt zich ois mit a gevain.” Everything ends in weeping.

    But this is also true: “Di klainer hartz nemt arum di groisseh velt.”Approximately, and verily: The heart is small and encompasses the whole world.
