Forget The Pope, Peter Rubinstein to Retire
The Central Synagogue rabbi has been a fixture at the flagship reform shul
Some significant news this morning, it’s been announced that Rabbi Peter Rubinstein of New York’s Central Synagogue will step aside next summer after more than 20 years at the major Lexington Avenue synagogue.
In a message to his congregants, Central Synagogue President David Edelson wrote:
Despite the sense of sadness that many of you may feel, this is not a dark day for Central. Instead, this is a time to reflect on our good fortune for having been led by such an amazing person and rabbi since July 1991. It is a time to appreciate how strong and vibrant Central is today, largely thanks to Rabbi Rubinstein’s vision and leadership. And it is a time to focus on the possibilities ahead for Central, building on the astounding foundation created by our beloved Senior Rabbi.
According to Edelson, Central Synagogue Senior Cantor Angela Buchdahl, who is also ordained as a rabbi, has expressed interest in succeeding Rubinstein. The synagogue has formed a transition committee to handle the process.
An early congrats to Rabbi Rubinstein on his impending emeritus-dom!
