In 2001, PM boasted of manipulating Oslo accords

Meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu last week, President Obama could not have been more effusive. “I believe Prime Minister Netanyahu wants peace,” Obama said. “I believe he is ready to take risks for peace.”

A newly revealed tape of Netanyahu in 2001, being interviewed while he thinks the cameras are off, shows him in a radically different light. In it, Netanyahu dismisses American foreign policy as easy to maneuver, boasts of having derailed the Oslo accords with political trickery, and suggests that the only way to deal with the Palestinians is to “beat them up, not once but repeatedly, beat them up so it hurts so badly, until it’s unbearable” (all translations are mine).

According to Haaretz’s Gideon Levy, the video should be “Banned for viewing by children so as not to corrupt them, and distributed around the country and the world so that everyone will know who leads the government of Israel.”

Netanyahu is speaking to a small group of terror victims in the West Bank settlement of Ofra two years after stepping down as prime minister in 1999. He appears laid-back. After claiming that the only way to deal with the Palestinian Authority was a large-scale attack, Netanyahu was asked by one of the participants whether or not the United States would let such an attack come to fruition.

“I know what America is,” Netanyahu replied. “America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won’t get in their way.” He then called former president Bill Clinton “radically pro-Palestinian,” and went on to belittle the Oslo peace accords as vulnerable to manipulation. Since the accords state that Israel would be allowed to hang on to pre-defined military zones in the West Bank, Netanyahu told his hosts that he could torpedo the accords by defining vast swaths of land as just that.

“They asked me before the election if I’d honor [the Oslo accords],” Netanyahu said. “I said I would, but … I’m going to interpret the accords in such a way that would allow me to put an end to this galloping forward to the ’67 borders. How did we do it? Nobody said what defined military zones were. Defined military zones are security zones; as far as I’m concerned, the entire Jordan Valley is a defined military zone. Go argue.”

Smiling, Netanyahu then recalled how he forced former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher to agree to let Israel alone determine which parts of the West Bank were to be defined as military zones. “They didn’t want to give me that letter,” Netanyahu said, “so I didn’t give them the Hebron agreement [the agreement giving Hebron back to the Palestinians]. I cut the cabinet meeting short and said, ‘I’m not signing.’ Only when the letter came, during that meeting, to me and to Arafat, did I ratify the Hebron agreement. Why is this important? Because from that moment on, I de facto put an end to the Oslo accords.”

President Obama, and anyone else concerned about Israel’s commitment to the peace process, may watch the tape online here.

“Being a Jew, I believe the Palestinians are fighting for a home land for themselves too.”

Being ignorant, you ignore the facts that
    - the Palestinians already have two states, Jordan and Gaza
    - they don’t need yet a third homeland, especially one which overlooks and will bombard the Isaeli heartland
    - according to recent polls, they are fighting not for a homeland but to eliminate Israel.

  2. tc says:

Gaza is a state? Jordan is a Palestinian state?
Ugly, but good to know what kind of radicals we are dealing with in Israel and their American supporters.

  3. rykart says:

Really, what’s all the fuss about Netanyahu, or for that matter, his right hand ghoul Avigdor Leiberman? They are no different at all from Barak and Tzipi Livni or Menachem Begin, or Golda Meir, or David Ben Gurion or any of other Nazi clowns who have run the septic tank known as Israel. Their vicious policies toward the Palestinians have been all but identical. The great “dove” Ithzak Rabin presided over the largest ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Israeli history–the expulsions from Lydah and Remleh.

It’s simply a myth that any of these hoodlums was ever a voice of sanity and moderation. The Israeli leadership was forged out of terrorist gangs and has remained a criminal enterprise, of which the current Prime Minister is in no way an aberration.

  4. Stop Arab Imperalism says:

“Gaza is a state? Jordan is a Palestinian state?”

They both have governments (though the Gazan is far more murderous than the Jordanian). They both have a majority Palestinian population.

The Israelis are too kind; as Benny Morris suggests, they really should have expelled the west bank popuation to Jordan.

But that won’t happen – the Israeli public supports a Palestinian state in the west bank once the Palestinians resign themselves to accepting Israel.

  5. mick says:

Stop Arab Imperalism you sick prick

  6. Stop Arab Imperalism says:

Mick, Benny Morris is right for several reasons:

    1. The properties looted from Sephardim in the “Jewish naqba” are 3 times the current size of Israel. Sephardi-Mizrahi Jews deserve compensation from the Arab world, if need be in the form of the west bank.

    2. A Palestinian presence in the west bank will always be a threat to Israel’s survival, given the geographical and topographical realities.

    3. Population exchanges with land transfer have, in the past, been the only way to peace between intertwined, hostile populations. Examples are the Greco-Turkish exchange and the Partition of India.

    4. Such an exchange of population bettween Israel and the Arab countries, with full compensation of all parties, may be the only way to peace in the Mideast.

    5. The Quartet plus the Arab oil countries certainly have sufficient funds for such compensation of both Palestinians and Sephardim.

    6. Given the endemic corruption in the PA and the genocidal brutality of Hamas, the only viable Palestinian leadership is that represented by a half-Palestinian Jordanian heir and a largely Palestinian legislature. In other words, the Jordanian option is likely more viable than the two-state option.

By the way, I ust compliment you on your scintilating knowledge and arguments.

  7. Stop Arab Imperalism says:

    Benny Morris’ position:

“Morris has criticized Ben-Gurion for not carrying out such a plan [of complete Palestinian expulsion], saying “In the end, he faltered… If he had carried out a full expulsion – rather than a partial one – he would have stabilized the State of Israel for generations.”"

  8. frank says:

  9. Joey Tavares says:

My father is Sephardim, the kind that cuckooed themselves on the Açores to escape Isabella.

Following S.A.I.’s logic, that the Sephardim-Mizrahi are owed land three times the current size of Israel:

I submit that the lands of North America should be turned over to the First Nations, Aboriginals, Métis, and North American Indians. Immediately.

C’est la bonne chose à faire, non?

  10. Stop Arab Imperalism says:

First, the logic is Benny Morris’s, not mine.

Second, what is proposed is a population exchange. You seem to have trouble understanding the word exchange.

Sephardim were deprived of their citizenship and assets in Muslim countries and have received citizenship and assets in Jewish Palestine instead.

Arab Palestinians will be reqired to turn over their Palestinians assets to Jews and receive as compensation assets (property or cash) in Jordan instead.

Jordan might want to claim those costs from the other Arab states which benefited from confiscated Sephardi-Mizrai assets.

Where are North American Europeans to receive land in your exchnge scheme?

And of what relevance is your father?

  11. Stop Arab Imperalism says:

Tavares, read this. You might learn something:

  12. Stop Arab Imperalism says:

    Tavares

«La bonne chose à faire» c’est une bêtise. Le peuple juif devrait plutôt penser à sa survie.

    Tavares and Mick

You can rest easy; Morris and myself may favour completing the population exchange, but the majority of the Israeli electorate does not. It favours a Palestinian state, once the Palestinians resign themselves to living in peace with Israel.

  13. Bill Clinton says:

The solution is very simple: Stop using US taxpayers money to subsidize Israel.

  14. dan says:

hasbara your way out of this

  15. Stop Arab Imperalism says:

“Stop using US taxpayers money to subsidize Israel.”

Stop displaying your ignorance. Israel receives no economic aid, and its $3b of military aid (representing less than 2% of Israel’s GDP) must be spent in the USA subsiding US arms manufacturers.

Stopping that aid wouldn’t harm Israel in the least, and would in fact free Israel to buy its arms elsewhere.

Now, about the billions the USA wastes upon its enemies the Palestinians and Arabs …..

You are right, callie. The only mystery is why a Jewish publication would be so irresponsible as to give a platform to neo-Nazis and anti-Semites.

Israel to get Mega Military handout- 18 Jul 2010, The U.S. will give Israel its most extensive military aid package in history. Assistant Secretary of State, Andrew J. Shapiro says the increased US military assistance will help Tel Aviv reach tough decisions in peace talks with the Palestinians. Shapiro said, “since Israel is facing some of the toughest challenges in its history, US President Barack Obama has asked Congress for $2.775 billion in security assistance funding ’specifically for Israel’ in 2010″.
    — Is this DOUBLESPEAK … contradicting themselves, they want to give Israel the extensive military aid package to help them reach tough decisions in PEACE talk?
However, it’s not surprising to me because last week when Netanyahu visited DC, Pres Obama said Israel is his “right hand, in the Middle-East”. So now by sending great military dollars to Israel, Obama is strengthening his “right hand”. Sounds like someone is gearing up for War, not Peace though.

  24. AreaMan says:

Well, okay. You can stop the aid to Israel, but you must also:

    1. Stop the aid to Egypt, too.
    2. Stop subsidizing the Muslim world with trillions of dollars of unearned oil money. They didn’t do anything to earn it. They didn’t even know the oil was there.

Israel wouldn’t need a big defense budget if the Muslim states didn’t have weapons systems brought in from outside. The western industrialized powers are funding both sides in this war.

  25. Carleton Wu says:

Population exchanges with land transfer have, in the past, been the only way to peace between intertwined, hostile populations

Northern Ireland springs to mind as a counterexample. I suppose you could argue that situations where people learn to live with each other weren’t as bad as the ones where they separated themselves, but that’s backwards logic.

  26. Carleton Wu says:

allow me to add that there are only 13 million jews left on earth thanks to the Islam the religion of peace and the ‘love’ of our Christian friends. There are a billion each muslims and christians.
We are at the knife edge of extinction, Bibi has my support.

Yeah, that’s great if you’re an Israeli (altho you make the common mistake of lumping “Jewish”, “Israeli”, and “Zionist”, three separate categories of people). Not exactly an argument for eg the US to defend Israel’s right to annexation, xenophobia, and apartheid.
That is, you may think that some extreme position such as this protects Israel- in fact, it weakens it terribly. It erodes the relationship between Israel and its friends and provides endless bad press for Israel around the world. And it provides no real security, only the fervent hopes that someday some radical Palestinians will commit a large-scale terrorist attack- and then the Israeli Right can do what they have wanted for decades: kill or drive off the Palestinian people from their land…
Thou shalt not covet. That is one side of the equation keeping the conflict alive (the other being the lack of acceptance of the fait accompli that is the Israeli state among the Palestinians).

The properties looted from Sephardim in the “Jewish naqba” are 3 times the current size of Israel. Sephardi-Mizrahi Jews deserve compensation from the Arab world, if need be in the form of the west bank.

So if one person steals something from you, you are entitled to steal a similar amount from a bystander and then tell them if they don’t like it to seek compensation from the original thief?
This sort of moral vacuousness only comes from the desire of certain religious groups in Israel to maintain possession of what they perceive to be land given to them by Jehovah. There is no other rationale for thinking that this is a rational or moral solution.

  27. Gary Williams says:

Speaking of M. Begin, and considering the very serious charge of his having fascist inclinations, (which is a charge made in a letter to the New York Times (Saturday December 4, 1948 by Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, Sidney Hook, and 26 other leading Jewish intellectuals) I wondered how such an accusation could have all but disappeared from the public eye in a manner so complete that the man was later elected an Israel PM. That such an astounding charge, one penned by the world’s most famous intellectual, had also been hidden away on page 12 of the “Books” section in the NYT, suggested to me a possible reason for it……an effort by influential right-wingers — especially Jewish ones — to cover up their now-embarrassing (albeit pre-Holocaust) far-right activities.

Looking further, among the very first things I found was what appears to be a mass of conflicting dates about where and what Begin was doing during the period immediately prior to his showing up in Palestine. On one hand he was supposedly sitting in a soviet gulag up to his release in May ‘42, while other dates have him joining the Polish Army in late May or early June ‘41, after his release under an agreement that wasn’t made for another 2 months! (the Sikorsky-Mayerski Agreement, signed July 30, 1941).
Which leaves us to wonder at the likelihood of Stalin releasing a Jewish-Polish “agent of British imperialism” even earlier than the agreement having even been reached! What? Out of the goodness of his heart?

Not likely…..as were a great many other details I’d previously been led to believe as a typical consumer of what I now know to have been a revised chronology of events meant to gain sympathy for extreme right-wing elements in Israel, and were enabled by persons with similar motives back here in N. America.

  28. rykart says:

gary, if you’re interested in the topic of Einstein’s growing disgust with Israel’s steady tilt toward Nazism and fascism, you should have a look at the recently released book “Einstein and Zionism.” A lot of Einstein letters and other documents appearing for the first time in English.

Suffice it to say, the legend of Einstein’s unbreakable fealty to the Jewish state is on a par with the lie that Einstein was deeply religious. He rejected God, regarded the Jewish religion as “childish” and today would almost certainly be entirely in the pro-Palestinian camp, as so many other Jews of character are.

  29. digbydolben says:

What Netanyahu and his fascist Likudniks are slowly but surely conjuring into existence is an abandonment by politically sophisticated Palestinians of any campaign for an “independent state.” Correctly, they increasingly despair of it, because the creation of so many “settlements” has rendered almost logistically impossible the exchanges of territories and populations described above. What Netanyahu and his ilk may very soon have to confront is a massive campaign of non-violent resistance to the Zionist ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Jerusalem and the West Bank–as well as demands for full, equal citizenship rights in a secular, pluralist “Palestinian Israel” or “Israeli Palestine.” This will, on account of the “ticking time bomb” of Arab demographics, toll the knell of doom for the so-called “Jewish State,” which is, in terms of “politically-correct” democratic ideology in the modern West, about as retrograde an idea as a “Catholic State” or a “Caucasian State” or a “Protestant State.” If Netanyahu and his supporters in Israel think they are isolated now, how will they feel when, and if the Palestinian Gandhi or Martin Luther King is leading non-violent resistance to expulsions and travel-restrictions, and is being cheered on by the free press of the rest of the world? That day is coming, and, with it, the end of the “Jewish State,” and it will be this rejectionist stance of the Israeli right-wing, as well as their refusal to use the good offices of their American ally to create an autonomous Palestine, that will have hastened it along.

So after reading his comments the first question that comes to my mind…..so does this mean that Fibi Netanyahu is a man of trickery and deceit, or one of integrity who says what he means and means what he says? Or doesn’t it matter in relationships with the Goy? Or is it an example of there being more truth than fiction to stereotypes?

  33. David G. says:

    “Carleton Wu says:

Actually what an event such as that in Israel would likely mean is a repeat of 9-11 in the USA, and that “The Powers That Be” would plan and willingly kill innocent people as a set up and rationale to kill many others all under false pretenses (false flag).

  34. Avner Stein says:

“What Netanyahu and his fascist Likudniks are slowly but surely conjuring into existence is an abandonment by politically sophisticated Palestinians of any campaign for an “independent state.” Correctly, they increasingly despair of it, because the creation of so many “settlements” has rendered almost logistically.”

I see, so the Palestinians can’t tolerate a minor Jewish presence? Israel is 20% Arab and it does just fine. Why can’t a peace-loving Palestine be 10% Jewish?

The “settlements” are loved by the Palestinians and contribute over 300 million annual to the West Bank economy. Over 40,000 Palestinians work in the settlements.

Why? Because they get paid and treated better than anywhere else.

Once polling the Palestinians, a majority oppose a ban on settlement construction.

And if you didn’t know, Jews lived in the West Bank before it was called the West Bank (Jordan is the East Bank FYI).

Settlements are a non-issue and this was confirmed in 2000 when Arafat threw out the Camp David Accords even though it provided him a Jew-free Palestine.

And that was 10 years ago.

The longer the Palestinians take to surrender the more land Israel will claim for settlements.

And soon there will be no land left.

And then there will be peace.

  35. “Now, about the billions the USA wastes upon its enemies the Palestinians and Arabs …..”
links? any evidence to support your claim?

  36. Avner Stein says:

    36 billion to Iraq

    1.5 billion to Egypt

    2 billion to Pakistan

    6 billion to Afghanistan

100 million to PA (5 billion since 2000)

10 billion spent annually maintaining military bases in muslim states

And then the 200 billion+ of weapons sold to Muslim states since the 1950s, 95 billion to Saudi Arabia alone.

And we have never placed conditions on any muslim state. Egypt continues to support al-shabaab in somalia (17,000 killed since 2006) or the Islamist Arabs murdering Dinkas in Darfur (300,000). Recently the head of the Arab League defended Omar-Al Bashir, and the so-called moderate Palestinian leadership met with him 2 months ago.

Of course the Left doesn’t care…Israel is the problem.

  37. George says:

There are good Jews and bad Jews. I no longer use the “I” word to describe the State of “I”. I reject what Jews did to the Palestinians in the 1930’s and 1940’s. I reject what Jews did in the 1960’s when they built their nuclear arsenal. I reject a country that consists of a majority of Jews. There is not peace in the illegitimate Jewish nation between Arabs and Jews. Arabs are inferior and do not enjoy the same legal rights. We could argue foreign aid forever. The video of Netanyahu is out and will not go back in the bag. Marx was right and about Judaism and Christianity. Religion is rubbish. Maintaining religion will be your downfall.

  38. Avner Stein says:

“There are good Jews and bad Jews. I no longer use the “I” word to describe the State of “I”.

The bad Jews were the communist freaks who worked with stalin and ran concentration camps for soviet dissidents. the bad jews were those who abandoned their jewish identity to prove their fidelity to communism, even persecuting fellow jews.

the bad jews were members of the chekka (KGB) who rounded up zionists and sent them to the gulags. the bad jews were the communists who forced the expulsion of millions of russian jews because life was so unbearable.

as far as the 1930s and 40s, irrelevant. the russian revolution killed over 20 million, 200x the amount of people killed in the 100 years of conflict between the arabs and the jews.

when i see marx wackos attack israel, i laugh – they aren’t on a moral level to even talk about israel.

  40. Gary Williams says:

Avner. In your attempt to associate individual incidents of authoritarian submission occurring under totalitarian rule with the economic strategy of the state, I note the complete absence of any reference to those that I would think would be first and foremost in your mind….. the Jewish Kapos who worked Hitler’s extermination and work camps.

You are, however, correct that the actions of these people are things we must despise and reject no matter where and under what conditions they occurred under. But you should also know about the research begun after WW2 by people interested in trying to discover if there are any tell-tale signs or commonalities the rest of us can be aware of so proactive steps can be taken in the hope that no such thing as the Holocaust ever happens again.

And the data compiled during those early studies – and in research that is still ongoing and has been confirmed repeatedly ever since – is a strong correlation between those who submit quite readily to the demands of an authority figure (authoritarian submission) and persons who also readily describe themselves as *right-wing* and socially conservative. Yes….it’s absolutely true that left-wing authoritarians also exist, but in the overall big picture – not just your own personal experiences with these creatures, there’s really no question that your remarks should be directed almost solely at right-wingers if they are to reflect the situation more accurately. Or…to put it in the words of Dr. Robert Altemeyer, a man who has been doing this research for over 3 decades and is a leading authority on the subject, “Authoritarians on the left have been as rare as hen’s teeth in my samples”. (quoted in “Political Conservatism As Motivated Social Cognition”, Kruglanski, Jost, et al.)

  41. Avner Stein says:

    @Gary

Thanks for ignoring my post. The Jewish capos were Jewish caps. Over 200,000 Jews were killed in pogroms during the Russian Civil War.

Interestingly, many of the Jews turned to Marxism because their fathers before them were persecuted because of their Jewish identity.

But abandoning their Jewish culture to prove fidelity to a communist cause, they believed they would be accepted as equals.

90% of the communist revolutionaries were Jews. Even Lenin had a Jewish grandfather.

Jews chekas were responsible for the murder of the Tsar and his family.

When the communist regime was installed, the Jews participated in some of the worst massacres since the roman-jew war. Millions killed, at least 30 million fellow russian citizens. Jewish KGB practices the worst kinds of torture on thousands of dissidents, some of which were Jews.

Meanwhile, the Zionists were busy planting Jews and trying to acquire a state through diplomacy.

I find it hilarious that communist and marxists say Israel has no right to exist because a couple hundred thousand Arabs were uprooted from their homes.

GUESS WHAT? Over 13 million (yes million) ethnic Europeans were uprooted from their homes in soviet transfers. Over 1,000,000 killed, 1,000,000 raped by the red army.

And this was in the 1940s.

So you tell me which ideology is worse – Communism or Zionism.

Zionist wars – ~50,000 killed in the last 100 years

Communist wars – 100 million killed

    LOL

  42. Ja says:

You can compare most ideologies to communism (or even nazism while you’re at it) and say they’re not worse. Of course they’re not worse, that does not make them respectable either.

  43. Rusty says:

Most political experts will tell you that Israel’s is digging its own grave and its end as a Jewish state is very near.

  44. Advocate4Liberty says:

Avner Stein says “because a couple hundred thousand Arabs were uprooted from their homes” and “Over 13 million (yes million) ethnic Europeans were uprooted from their homes in soviet transfers. Over 1,000,000 killed, 1,000,000 raped by the red army”

Not by the Palestinians, of course, but we won’t let that little detail bother us. Since the zionists “only” uprooted “a couple hundred thousand” they must just be the sweetest little darlings. Ok. Let’s all hurl.
