• A rocket from Gaza hit Ashkelon—the first in more than a year—causing damage and panic, though no casualties. [NYT]

• Staten Island’s Democratic congressman fired his communications director for leaking a list of his midterm opponent’s Jewish donors under the title, “Grimm Jewish Money Q2” (“Grimm” is the opponent’s unfortunate last name). [Politico]

• A tour of Ariel Sharon Park, a remarkable, state-of-the-art waste-management facility in Tel Aviv. [Slate]

• Tablet Magazine contributor Benny Morris discusses what is open (and what isn’t) in the Israeli archives. [Chronicle of Higher Ed.]

• Renowned NBA blogger Bethlehem Shoals (née Nathaniel Friedman) plumbs Amar’e Stoudemire’s purportedly Jewish background, and finds murky evidence both ways, and nothing dispositive. [Fanhouse]

• The FBI had been keeping a file on Howard Zinn for six decades. [FBI]

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-New York) brings it.

By the way, given who officiated his wedding, I think it’s safe to say that Weiner will be in Rhinebeck this weekend congratulating the happy couple. We weren’t invited, but we wish them mazel tov anyway.

David says:

Geez, Marc. You help run a supposedly non-partisan magazine, so in theory you shouldn’t come off as partisan Democratic hack. Oh well…

Since you are a UWSer, I guess I need to put your video of Weiners’ fake rant in context. Um, the Dems could have pass this legislation under normal procedures. But they wanted to attach a some illegal immigration provision to the bill. But to do that, they had to change the procedure of passing the bill. Instead of the straight up and down vote. They used a procedure that block any Republican amendments. In doing that, the Dems needed 2/3 majority to pass this bill. Oh, not all the Dems voted for this bill either. Weiner and Marc, hacks indeed. Sorry to ruin your day.

David,
The magazine is “non-partisan” in that they give a platform to a wide range of views. It’s also a Jewish magazine, and it just turns out that today a Jewish democrat gave an impressive and watchable speech about how health care should be provided for 9/11 responders. I guess the other angle they could have taken was that Eric Cantor voted against it.

Best,
Dan

David says:

Dan,

What annoyed me was that Marc posted this video without any context whats so ever. If you want to believe that Republicans stand for all that is wrong with the country, well I can’t change your thinking. But it annoys the h*ll out me when Marc posts stuff like this. A little context can go a long way and if Marc bothered at all with that, I would not posted my first comment. Dan, if you want to know the real reason why Weiner put on this show, follow this link.

Weiner has been cultivating the Clintons for years. I mean, years. He’s ambitious as hell, and you will be discussing his presidential run at some point. he is a professional pol, with all the strengths and all the weaknesses. No experience at all outside politics.

Paul Leber says:

Congressman King, a co-sponsor of the bill, has pointed out that the Dem’s leadership could have put the bill to a vote requiring only a majority. Had they, the bill would have already passed. But they chose not to, instead requiring that it pass by a 2/3rds majority. Why? On face it makes no sense whatsoever, akin to bidding against yourself in an auction yo’ve already won. Actually, as political craft it makes considerable sense–requiring a 2/3rds majority, caused the bill fail giving Congressman Weiner achance to to put on his phony act. He’s a true ham, but, nonetheless, he makes you believe he’s actually mad and outraged despite the fact it’s only political theater in the service of an anti-Republican canard. So much for the honor of the leaders of the current Democrat/Obama cabal.

Cheers, nice blog.
