In my continuing attempt to understand just what is going on in Egypt (and what we should want to go on in Egypt), I talked to Les Gelb, the president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations. Gelb has been one of the leading participants in the debate between those who instrinsically value Egyptian democracy and those who qualify that value with concern for stability, particularly as far as Egyptian security policy is concerned. As you’ll see, Gelb falls in the latter group.
