Weiner Fails the Koch Test
Former NYC mayor says congressman won’t follow in his footsteps
Earlier this month, in Tablet Magazine, Tevi Troy floated the provocative and weirdly persuasive theory that Democratic presidential aspirants require Ed Koch’s support to win election (or re-election). Troy limited his analysis to the White House, but should it also apply to Gracie Mansion—where Koch once resided—then Rep. Anthony Weiner, the Democrat from Queens who was seen as a future New York City mayoral candidate until his recent scandal broke, is screwed . “I don’t think he can ever be mayor of the city of New York,” Hizzoner opined. He added, “He might run again for Congress years from now or some other position comparable.” But New York mayor? Fuhgeddaboudit.
