On Israel discourse among American Jews

Just wanted to take this opportunity to applaud Spencer Ackerman for writing a brave, fabulous essay, and to thank him for publishing it in Tablet. And to add, as we say on Twitter, “+1.”

Sounding Off [Tablet Magazine]

    Isn’t it sad that it’s considered “brave” to acknowledge a clearly anti-semitic term as what it is?

    @Marc R.
    I was just thinking the same thing.
    Ackerman’s essay was quite good and in some circles he may indeed be brave for writing it — but then again, maybe he shouldn’t be in such circles.

    @Marc R Exactly. Those on the left who condone these terms may want to think of what environment they’re creating for the rest of us. Let’s just say, using these and other anti-Semitic terms and pretending that the rhetoric is “just criticizing Israel,” certainly doesn’t put out the welcome mat.

    The problem is, the vast majority of people interested in this issue cannot talk about it with any civility. And when people like Lee Smith and Caroline Glick are leading the conversation among the new intellectual elite, then — all is lost.

    Lee Smith and Caroline Glick add important factual basis to discussions – especially when they challenge the distortions that those on the left articulate, as Ackerman so clearly points out, and then assume are true because they said it.
