Did You Hear The One About…?: Unorthodox Episode 5

The dolphin accused of spying for Israel, plus Jason Zinoman on the new Jewish comedy and Dan Savage on a doomed West Germany romance

August 27, 2015

It’s Thursday, and you know what that means: a new episode of Unorthodox! On this week’s show, a dolphin accused of being an Israeli spy, the world’s oldest Jewish person dies at 114, and a sobering, if informative, discussion of a Palestinian prisoner’s 60-day hunger strike. And that’s just the first 10 minutes.

Our Jewish guest is Jason Zinoman, who as we quickly learn has the greatest job in the world—he’s the first-ever comedy critic for the The New York Times. He talks Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and his theory about the new era of Jewish comedy (captured perfectly, he explains, in a Yom Kippur break fast scene in Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner’s new show, Difficult People.)

Our non-Jewish guest is writer, podcaster, and activist Dan Savage. He talks about the Ashley Madison hack, the Duggar family, and his infamous rechristening of Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum. His question for the panel is an etiquette query about a long-ago romance in West Germany lost in translation: specifically, his German boyfriend thinking he was Jewish (He’s Catholic, but with Semitic features).
