New York City Shuts Down Jewish Social Club
‘The Brownstone’ temporarily shuttered by Department of Buildings

East Village blogger EV Grieve brings our attention to the recent fate of something called The Brownstone, a (you guessed it) brownstone on East 12th St. that bills itself as “the new Jewish social club that sophisticated New Yorkers have been longing for.” Unfortunately, those sophisticated New Yorkers are going to have keep waiting—the city temporarily shut down The Brownstone, citing an illegal change in building use, Grieve reports.
The Department of Buildings complaint, which identified the building owner as Congregation Khal Chasidim, listed an “apartment building converted to dormitory with rooftop being used as a party space, serving alcohol and playing amplified music” and issued a full vacate order for building alterations made without a certificate of occupancy.
According to The Brownstone’s website, the non-profit is a “one-stop shop” for college students and young professionals in New York City:
