Each month this year we’ve been bringing you stories of Jewish communities in America that are “doing Jewish” in unique ways. This month, we interrupted our regularly scheduled travels for a major event: On Nov. 14, 2023, the Jewish community packed its bags and descended on Washington, D.C., for the March for Israel.

Nearly 300,000 people took trains, planes, and automobiles to attend the March, which was organized in part by the Jewish Federations of North America. The event featured speeches that uplifted and unified our community, but some of the real magic took place on the National Mall, where the crowds were gathered.

On this installment of Across the JEW.S.A, you’ll hear from the family who arrived straight from their red-eye flight from California because they believe “you have to show up.” You’ll hear from an American Israeli who happened to be in Israel when the fighting broke out, and from a family who was there representing their daughter and sister, a lone soldier from Pittsburgh fighting in the IDF.

This is a special episode that represents so much of what we wanted this series to be: an insider’s look at some of the people who make our community so special.
