1. Best lunch restaurant: The Basta, meaning “market stall” in Hebrew, is located in the Carmel Market—and the menu changes based on what’s for sale that day. Location: 4 Hashomer St.
2. Best dinner restaurant: Salon, the upscale restaurant from well-known Israeli chef—and Israeli MasterChef judge—Eyal Shani, offers not only great food but also entertainment: most of the kitchen is smack in the middle of the restaurant, with chefs preparing the food in view of diners. The place is known to get even more exciting with the occasional table-top dancing. Location: 8 Maavar Yabuk St.
3. Best fine dining: Meir Adoni’s famed restaurant, Catit, is the height of fine dining. The menu shows a wide range of influences, from North African to Thai to Italian, and Adoni is known for his intricate style and attention to detail. Location: 57 Nahlat Binyamin.
4. Best Kosher Restaurant: Blue Sky, also opened by Adoni, is a kosher, dairy rooftop restaurant at the beachside Carlton Hotel. Location: 10 Elieze Peri St.
5. Best Vegan Restaurant: Zakaim, opened by three siblings who all turned to veganism, uses local and seasonal products and boasts a fully ecological space; all of the materials, dishes, and furniture are secondhand. Location: 98 Allenby St.
6. Best Street Food: Miznon, also from Eyal Shani, is a quality fast-food joint where the main theme is pita sandwiches. Locations: 23 Ibn Gvirol St. and 30 King George St.
